Keiko lahir dan dibesarkan di salah satu pulau kecil di Jepang. Ia meneruskan kuliahnya di Amerika Serikat, di California State University of Northridge di bidang Graphic Design. Ia kemudian menikah dengan orang Amerika Serikat dan telah menetap di Indiana bersama suami dan 2 anak lelakinya.
Setelah menerbitkan 5 buku anak-anak di Jepang dan bekerja sebagai desainer grafis selama 14 tahun, di tahun 1988, Keiko memutuskan untuk menggunakan waktunya untuk menulis buku bergambar. Menurut Keiko, membuat buku itu seperti berakting. Ia membayangkan dirinya menjadi karakter yang sedang ditulisnya saat itu.
Ambisi Keiko bukanlah untuk membuat seratus buku tetapi untuk membuat satu buku yang sangat bagus, yang akan dibaca dari generasi ke generasi "Akan tetapi, seratus buku yang sangat bagus, tentu saja akan lebih baik lagi", menurutnya.

Keiko lahir dan dibesarkan di salah satu pulau kecil di Jepang. Ia meneruskan kuliahnya di Amerika Serikat, di California State University of Northridge di bidang Graphic Design. Ia kemudian menikah dengan orang Amerika Serikat dan telah menetap di Indiana bersama suami dan 2 anak lelakinya.
Setelah menerbitkan 5 buku anak-anak di Jepang dan bekerja sebagai desainer grafis selama 14 tahun, di tahun 1988, Keiko memutuskan untuk menggunakan waktunya untuk menulis buku bergambar. Menurut Keiko, membuat buku itu seperti berakting. Ia membayangkan dirinya menjadi karakter yang sedang ditulisnya saat itu.
Ambisi Keiko bukanlah untuk membuat seratus buku tetapi untuk membuat satu buku yang sangat bagus, yang akan dibaca dari generasi ke generasi "Akan tetapi, seratus buku yang sangat bagus, tentu saja akan lebih baik lagi", menurutnya.
