 Ia lahir di Chicago dan memperoleh pendidikan di Northwestern University. Setelah bebas dari wajib militer sebagai penerbang dia mulai menulis naskah sandiwara untuk Broadway. Waktu berusia 25 tahun ia sudah menjadi penulis terkemuka. Sejak itu ia telah menghasilkan naskah untuk 23 film dan mencipta, memproduksi, bahkan menyutradai sendiri film-film TV terkenal yang sempat bertahan lama, antara lain Hart to Hart, and I Dream of Jeannie.
